Toto, Who Will be the Next Governor of Kansas?

That would be Lt. Governor Mark Parkinson - the person who will succeed Governor Kathleen Sebelius as the next governor of Kansas. He is a Democrat, but you wouldn't know that by reading his biography on the Kansas government web site. In fact, his name was never mentioned in any report that I read today announcing Sebelius's nomination for the head of the Department of Health and Human Services. I had to do some hunting to discover the rules of succession in Kansas when a sitting governor vacates her seat, mid-term.

"The office of the Lieutenant Governor has been substantially restructured in the past two decades, but the most important function still is to succeed to the governorship should that office become vacant."
